The world of culinary is a great world indeed and one that has excitement and advancement opportunity all through it. it is no wonder that culinary arts is one of the most sought out educations and degrees in the United States and the world today, and it is no little wonder that so many people are getting into the world of the kitchen. Culinary arts degrees can go a very long way in sealing a great future for the graduates.

-if you desire to travel while you work, a degree in culinary arts will allow you to find employment anywhere in the world, providing you know the basics of the language wherever you go.
-A degree also allows you to branch out into other related fields (e.g. health) that can provide you with knowledge that is beneficial to yourself and in some cases your family.
-The important thing to remember is that your degree and training in culinary art gives you the benefit of having options, while you have the opportunity to be creative.

try the cooking school. My dad once told me that if I had cooking skills I could work anywhere around the world because there's always hungry people to feed. He was true!
if you one day decide to change your work, you can work for your student loans first and do something else different.

I really like Rocco's cooking school! He? has a very natural and down to earth style. If he added some of the health benefits of his recipes, that would be good information for the health conscious viewer.

Love your grandmother. Med cooking is what it's all about.

tonidbrandt, what's to add? I'm 50, grew up on and live on Med cooking. It's healthy. I'm? healthy. Lot's of people are worried I could live another 100 years.

You can't go wrong with Med food. It's life giving. It improves and makes the best of life.

Love it!

You have an interview for a course? ha sounds weird.. In all honesty, when i hire people as chefs or cooks.. the only thing i want to hear is the truth, so if i were you id simply say that you're a quick leaner, haven't cooked too much in your life but you have developed a passion for cooking recently and would like to pursue it :)

But if it is a course you'll get in with no worries. My advice is to buy and read cookbooks/food magazines, the best way to learn to cook is through learning the theory then applying your skills with the knowledge you've taken in. It takes years to become a good cook/chef. won't happen over night.

hope that helped :D

I am pretty sure the bigger schools do! Like the CIA and maybe some others. You should take one at a community college if your school doesn't though.

If you want to be a good chef, then yes. you need to know about the chemical reactions in food. Molecular Gastronomy is pretty big right now. It's not so much food science, but the science of food. Some really crazy things are being served in restaurants, and it's with knowing alot about chemical compositions and reactions that this is happening. You can check out a couple sites:

High school and if you plan to go to LCB or somewhere fancy have kitchen experience because those applicants get short listed. I'm in my 2nd year and as the previous Chef mentioned it's not easy. Last year my class was 150, this year 30 and I can see half of these people never going on to cook professionally. You have to love it and also be a little crazy to enjoy this kind of work. You will be tired, sweaty maybe bleeding with people screaming at you and you are still having fun. There aren't a lot of people who can do that and all for minimum wage. You work every weekend and holiday and you never see your family or friends and you love that about it. My advise is work in a professional kitchen for a while and see if you still like it because its bears very little resemblance to cooking at home.

HS or GED

the main thing to remember that culinary school sounds cool but be ready to have no social life and make $10 an hr for about 5 yrs. it's a labor of love and for the dedicated only. out of my class only about 10-15% are still in the biz and you have a loan to pay as well so think it through. ppl get caught up in the idea but you have to be sure you want to make that commitment.

Usually just a HS Diploma or GED. Although some will take anyone depending on age.

Wise thing to do? Well - the majority of students who graduate there will not be Julia Childs or Gordon Ramseys. They will be kitchen help - making close to minimum wage and working in very difficult physical conditions for the first 7-12 years of their work life. For the majority - it is not a glamour job and it is hard work.

If you have larger aspirations - go to a 4 year college that has a Hospitality Management program (UNLV is one) or a community college for the first 2 years of that.

Usually just a HS Diploma or GED. Although some will take anyone depending on age.

Wise thing to do? Well – the majority of students who graduate there will not be Julia Childs or Gordon Ramseys. They will be kitchen help – making close to minimum wage and working in very difficult physical conditions for the first 7-12 years of their work life. For the majority – it is not a glamour job and it is hard work.

There aren't any requirements though having some back ground working in a restaurant particularly kitchen (if you can) is obviously not a bad move. Simply having some idea of how a kitchen runs and some basic things (like using knives properly), knowing what equipment is, what it does and how it works. I looked up the tuition at Johnson and Whales (GA), which is one of the top schools in the country, the tuition was just under 22,000. There are smaller schools that are more local (especially in metropolitan areas) that are of good quality that are probably cheaper. I tried to find the tuition for one that I know about that's local to me, but the tuition wasn't listed (it should however be cheaper). I don't have a true career in pastry arts (considering it in the future however- and have extensive culinary and restaurant background), I've know a few chefs personally and you definitely on the right track considering a vocational school. Also consider simply attending a couple semesters or your first year at a local college (that has a hospitality industry department) to really see if this is what you want to do (you can also take some other courses to explore you options a bit as well) before you commit to attending what is strictly a culinary school.

Research culinary arts school in your area. The Art Institutes offer a certificate program, and if you want to take that many classes you might want to go that far with it.

Where are you located, and how far are you willing to travel? Are you looking for day or evening classes? Also, are you looking to attend specific cooking classes (Asian, Latin, Italian cuisine, etc.) or baking classes, or a mix of both? With the answers to these questions, I may be able to help you further. :)

First you have culinary school 7 months to 4 years, depends where you go.
If you want to go on you look for apprentice programs and work under several masters until you are ready to go to a Masters program, like the one at Boston University.
Master Chefs spend many years honing their skills, sometimes in an academic setting but most time is spent on the job.

Advanced degrees are necessary for big bucks in the major houses and hotel chains but the best culinary education in in the back of the house sweating you nuts off.
